  2. Childhood • Edison Arantes do Nascimiento, who we know as Pele, was born on October 23, 1940 in Três Corações, Brazil • Pelé grew up in poverty in Bauru, São Paulo. • He developed a talent for soccer by kicking a rolled-up sock stuffed with rags around the streets of Bauru.

  3. Background • He tried out for the Santos professional soccer club when he was 15. • Pelé signed with Santos and immediately started practicing with the team's regulars.

Career • At age 15, his career began in the Santos Football Club • In 1956, Pele joined the Brazil national team • Retired in 1974 • Returned to football in 1975, with a 7 million dollar contract for 3 years in the North American Soccer League (NASL) • Played in the New York Cosmos between 1975-1977
