OUR MISSION… To provide a safe, structured, active learning environment while preparing students to participate in a global society.
LINDLEY HISTORY 101 • Opened in 1965, on Old Alabama Road. It was a public junior high school. (Current location of Pebblebrook High School) • Mr. Kenneth Moore was the first principal. • First mascot, “Lindley Legends”
LINDLEY HISTORY 101 • 1970, Lindley girls were allowed to wear pants, but only outfits which resembled skirts. • 1976, Lindley moved to 1550 Pebblebrook Circle (former home of PHS) and became a middle school. • 1976, Current 6th Grade Academy principal, Landon Brown was born.
LINDLEY HISTORY 101 • Named after Frank P. Lindley, a medical doctor and community activist of the Mableton community. He served on the Board of Education for 25 years. • Veterans Memorial Highway is a well-known industrial site of downtown Mableton.
LINDLEY FUN FACTS • 1992, December 3rd, Lindley’s most overdue book checked out on October 28, 1970, was finally turned in. WOW! • 2001, with support from SPLOST, Lindley moves into a new building on Veterans Memorial Hwy.
LINDLEY FUN FACTS • 2007, Lindley becomes the first middle school to adopt the “school-within-a-school” model in Cobb County. • One of the largest middle schools in the state of Georgia, with approximately 1,500 students.
LINDLEY FUN FACTS • An Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) School. • Recognized as an Advanced Placement Certified School Affiliate. • A diverse school with a large male student population and male teacher population.
LINDLEY FUN FACTS • 2003, Student, Mara Johnson, becomes the first African-American Spelling Bee Winner for Cobb County School District. She was in the 6th grade at the time. • Mara Johnson, an International Baccalaureate student at Campbell HS, will serve as a tutor for the 6th Grade Academy. She is a rising senior at Campbell HS.
MABLETON HISTORY 101 • The Creek Indians traded with other groups along the “Hills of Mableton” (current location of Publix shopping plaza). • The “Hills of Mableton” were the location of Civil War mounds (often created by the Mable House slaves and Mableton soldiers).
LINDLEY FUN FACTS • “Claim to Fame,” as a part of the Leonard Bernstein model of Artful Learning and the Grammy Foundation, Mary J. Blige appeared at Lindley MS in 2002, as a motivational speaker. • “Claim to Fame,” as a part of the Football for Life Program, Rapper T.I. (Clifford Harris) appeared in 2008, as a motivational speaker.
Good News About Lindley… • In January 2008, Lindley Middle School was recognized as an Advanced Placement School Affiliate. Our most significant accomplishment was a 300% increase in the Duke University middle school program.
Good News About Lindley… • In February 2008, Lindley Middle School was recognized as a National Demonstration Site School for AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This is a highlight of Lindley, and plans are being made to implement this initiative in the 6th Grade Academy, 2008-2009.
Good News About Lindley… • The Lindley Middle School Science Decathlon Team recently participated in the East Coast Regional Competition and received two 1st place wins and one 3rd place. • We represented Cobb County at the National Science Decathlon in May 2008, and placed 9th in the nation.
YOU ARE MAKING HISTORY • In the fall of 2008, the 6th Grade Academy will begin classes at The Barnes Center. • Principal Landon Brown began his teaching career here in 1998!!!
THE BARNES CENTER… • Named for former Georgia governor, Honorable Roy E. Barnes. He was born and raised in Mableton, Georgia.
HISTORY OF THIS BUILDING • Room 401, Principal Brown’s 1st class… • Team 6A, 1992 Addition. • Team 6D, 1972 Addition. • Team 6B and 6C, Original rooms of Pebblebrook High School, 1965 – 1976. • 4 large fields near gymnasium & back of school. • Walking path to Nickajack Park. • 7 natural habitats on this land alone!
LINDLEY PARTNERSHIP THE GEORGIA JAPANESE LANGUAGE SCHOOL UTILIZE THIS BUILDING EVERY SATURDAY, WITH APROXIMATELY 700 STUDENTS… THEY ARE A PARTNER IN EDUCATION TO LINDLEY 6TH GRADE ACADEMY AT THE BARNES CENTER
