Background of the CSC PhD scholarships • Initiated in 2007 for 5 years aiming for sending • 1st Class students to • 1st Class global universities • to carry out projects with 1st Class supervisors • Each year, 5000~6000 quotas were allocated, primarily for students from 985 universities or universities to have 985 platforms • From 2012, a new program is launched with limited change • Two types of PhD students supported: • students earning PhD abroad • PhD students carrying out exchange programs • Duration to be supported: • For PhD students enrolled at abroad: up to 48 months • For PhD students enrolled in China, 6 ~ 24 months

Eligibility to apply for PhD at UQ • PhD programs: • Bachelor graduates • Masters students • First year PhD students • Minimum academic achievement, research experience and English proficiency requirements apply. Details can be found in the link below http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/our-research-degrees. • Exchange PhD programs (occupational trainee): • Current PhD students with a maximum stay of 12 months • Note: EAIT has a strict rule on academics to take occupational trainees and you need to meet UQ’s English requirement for international students

Financial support for PhD students to be enrolled at UQ • From CSC: • International Travel • Living allowance • Overseas Student Health Insurance • From UQ • UQI tuition fee scholarship available for CSC students who meet UQ requirements. • For very top students, top-up scholarship (~A$2500) might be available

Application process - 1 • Check “UQ Researchers” or “UQ experts” websites to identify your potential supervisor • http://www.uq.edu.au/uqresearchers/ • http://www.uq.edu.au/uqexperts/ • Email your potential supervisor to express your interest in studying a PhD under his/her supervision; together with your CV and academic transcripts; also you should mention that you are applying for a CSC scholarship • If your supervisor decides to support you, you and your supervisor should work on your application form (can be downloaded from link below) • http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/how-to-apply

  19. Application process - 2 • Submit your application (the application form with other documents requested, e.g. your CV, academic transcripts and degree certificates, and English certificates) to the postgraduate admin officer of the enrolling school before 1st December 2011 • Make sure you meet UQ English Language Proficiency requirement when you submit your admission package (English test results are valid for 2 years only, and must still be valid upon commencement at UQ) • IELTS minimum score: 6.5 overall, 6.0 in writing, or • IBTOEFL minimum score: 90 overall, 21 in writing • You need to identify two academic referees for prepare recommendation letters (the form can be downloaded from the link below) and letters should be sent by your referees to your potential supervisor directly • http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/how-to-apply

Application timelines • Before 1 December 2011: Admission application package should be lodged to the postgraduate admin officer of the enrolling school • December 2011, all applications will be rigorously screened by the research committee of the enrolling school. Unsuccessful applications will be notified in mid/late December • From late January to February 2012: UQ admission and tuition fee scholarship offers will be sent to successful candidates • 1 March – 20 March 2012: CSC application starts • Late applications will not be accepted

UQ documents needed for CSC applications • UQ offer of admission (this can be conditional, but English requirement must be met) • Offer of UQI tuition fee scholarship (this is conditional on being awarded the CSC scholarship, you will need to provide a copy of the CSC scholarship letter to UQ) • Research proposal • Supervisor’s CV

  22. Expected CSC selection timelines • April/May 2012: CSC assessment starts • May/June 2012: Successful candidates announced • October 2012 onwards – Arriving in UQ

  23. UQ help point for CSC applications • The Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland will the first contact point if you need help with your UQ enrolment applications. Please email your questionsor requests to info@confucius.uq.edu.au • In addition, the UQ’s Confucius Institute will prepare a website to help potential CSC applicants to prepare their UQ enrolment applications. Since the new CSC policy will be launched on 1st November 2011, it is expected that the Confucius Institute website will be available by the end of the first week in November. • http://www.uq.edu.au/confucius/csc-students
