Outline • Project • Goals • Design Norms • Analysis Performed • Main Obstacles • Major Decisions • Future Work
Project • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) • Competition: The Supermileage® competition provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design project that involves the development and construction of a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle. Vehicles are powered by a small four-cycle engine. The vehicles will run a specified course with the vehicle obtaining the highest combined kilometers per liter (miles per gallon) rating plus design segment points winning the event.
Goals • Vehicle will: • Achieve 500 mpg • Comply with all rules set forth by SAE competition • Project will: • Raise awareness about fuel efficiency • Roll over project
Design Norms • Stewardship • Use resources efficiently and responsibly • Caring • Caring for future generations • Trust • Vehicle must be reliable, dependable and safe • Comply with competition rules
Analysis Performed • Engine • Shell • Chassis Design • Drive Train
Engine Analysis • Hot vapor • Preheat fuel from exhaust stream • ~7% increase in efficiency • Increase compression ratio • Larger compression ratios are more efficient: • Milling the cylinder head • ~5% increase in efficiency
Engine Analysis • Overhead camshaft configuration • More efficient combustion • Engine “breathes” better http://auto.howstuffworks.com/harley4.htm
Shell Analysis • Governing Drag Equation: • 15 mph minimum average velocity (V) requirement set forth in competition rules • Minimize frontal area (A)
Chassis Analysis • Design: • Three wheel configuration • Power to trailing wheel • Aluminum construction • EES analysis • Roll bar • 250lbf requirement • Integrate with shell to minimize frontal area
Drive Train • Centrifugal clutch • Engage within optimal rpm range • Gearing • 3 gear rear hub • Jack Shaft • Intermediate gear
Major Obstacles • Budget • Engine Delivery • 6-8 weeks as of 11/30/2010 • No Experience with competition • Time management • Need to stick to Gantt chart and critical path.
Future Work • FEA analysis of chassis and components • January 2011 • Build Dynamometer • January 2011 • Order Components • In progress • Finalize Design • Build and test • Spring Semester • Compete • June 2011
Conclusion • Analysis shows that this project is feasible • Concern: • Budget • Time • Resources • Scope
