About OpenLab in General • OpenLab is a digital platform where faculty, students, and staff can work, learn, and collaborate. • Powered by WordPress, a very popular web publishing open source software. • Some notable WordPress users - http://en.wordpress.com/notable-users/ • It gives you the option to make public and private pages, post content, enable sophisticated features in just a few minutes. • Customized for CityTech’s needs by a group of faculty, staff, and current and former students. • Part of the Title V initiative “A Living Laboratory: Revitalizing General Education for a 21st-Century College of Technology,” funded by the U. S. Department of Education under its Strengthening Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI).
OpenLab Analysis • Easy to use tool, although perceived as difficult. • Users are in control of the content and have many ready-to-use plug-ins. • No department have a strong presence in the OpenLab • Arch Tech, Humanities, English, CMCE have some presence • Most users create an account or project and forget about it. • There are many workshops available.
CET OpenLab Initiative • Take the lead to have a strong presence in the OpenLab. How? • Make the current department website more focused on prospective students. • http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/academics/deptsites/cetech/ • Create a departmental OpenLab site that mirrors the CityTech’s official site but that we can control and update and is more suited for current students. • http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/cet • Encourage our faculty to host their CityTech websites in OpenLab. • Migrate from websupport1 • Encourage our faculty use OpenLab in their courses, that way our students will also become skillful in OpenLab.
