HOW CHILDREN LEARN LANGUAGES 1.Mother tongue L1 The mother tongue is caught and not taught .No conscious effort is necessary.
2.Target language/Second language/foreign language-L2 L 2 has to be learnt .Conscious efforts are to be made to learn L 2.
THREE KINDS OF LEARNING : LEARNING BY HEART HABIT FORMATION ACQUIRING RULES SUBCONSCIOUSLY
LEARNING BY HEART Merits :1.Most useful in learning things which are fixed and limited . 2.Mastering fixed items in a language Demerits:1.Language is not something which is limited and finite. 2.Language-not a body of knowledge but a set of skills-lstg,spkg,rdg,wrtg.
HABIT FORMATION Merits :1.Language learning is seen as developing a set of habits .A mechanical activity .Imitation/drills/practice .Good for learning grammar/reinforcement Demerits:1. Creative nature of language. 2.Children use language independently, acquire the rules of language and apply it .
ACQUIRING RULES Merits:1.acquiring rules subconsciously through lstg, spkg,rdg,wrtg. 2.L2 is learnt through interaction, exposure, involvement, Practice. 3.Acquiring rules effortlessly and using language in the same way as the mother tongue.
LANGUAGE 1.A system of sounds. 2.A system of structures. 3.A system of meanings. In the case L1 all the three systems are acquired. In learning L2 the best way is to acquire rules subconsciously by reading and listening to language rather than learning solely from text books and grammar books.
Language is learnt through exposure, interaction, involvement and sustained practice. Curriculum to be supplemented with rich audio and print environment. LEARNING A---Z FULFILS THIS REQUIREMENT.
