Objective to enhance student learning Fewer, longer modules will enhance student learning whilst retaining flexibility (Senate Dec 04) • Long study periods and large modules • develop understanding, analysis and application • time for feedback and integrated coursework • cohesive and integrated course with greater emphasis on course objectives • opportunity for different types of learning

Process • Senate agreed Dec 04 that restructuring would enhance learning and asked LTB to investigate further • 3 working groups undertook detailed investigation of academic structure, business processes and academic benefits • LTB concluded that the University should restructure but that resources and planning would be required • PME then considered further and agreed in principle to allocate the resources for restructuring

PME decision • PME agreed that the University should adopt a two-block teaching an assessment structure not earlier than 2008-09 • PME further recommended that a two block structure should be implemented with appropriate resources, facilities, planning, infrastructure developments and timescales • 6 detailed points

  5. PME point of approval 1 • Prior to starting a 2 block structure there should be a revised student information system in place • Planning should assume a start in 2008-09 • Meets main RCB concerns

  9. PME point of approval 5 • A phased approach should be adopted • University level activities • Student record system • Business processes • Support for academic change • Schools should take responsibility for the pace of change in their school • Possible annual schedule in Appendix

Annual Monitoring and Review • LTB, QESC, Deans etc have been reviewing APMR • Standard form no longer suitable for on-campus courses • Schools review programmes and report process, summary and action • Implement from this academic year • QESC to agree details with schools • Report to next Senate
