Nucleariids: Fungi Neighbors • “Our analyses with nuclear (118 proteins) and mitochondrial (13 proteins) data now robustly associate Nucleariida and Fungi as neighbors, an assemblage that we term 'Holomycota'. Protista to Animalia: Protozoans • Choanoflagellate rDNA and mitochondrial genome comparisons with three sponge species indicate protista -> animalia connection (Lavrov et. al., 2005) • Choanoflagellates use their flagellum to draw in water and filter feed in the same way as sponges • Some Choanoflagellates form simple colonies

  4. Plant-like Protists: Autotrophs • Have chlorophyll and also carry out photosynthesis • Four phyla: euglenophytes, chrysophytes, diatoms, dinoflagellates • Have accessory pigments that help absorb light, thus giving algae a variety of colors
