Security Staff Assist, Protect and Direct
Responsibilities • Enforce event and building rules • Manage the crowd • Know the building floor – top to bottom (Level A through Level D) so you can provide information
Rules to Enforce: • No Re-entry – once a patron leaves the building during a ticketed event, there is no re-entry. • The Adams Center is a non-smoking building. For certain events, exterior smoking sections are provided. • You can only perform pat downs or check bags if you have been trained to do so.
Crowd Management Uniformed officers are for crowd control; so what’s the difference? Truthfully, no crowd is controlled, only managed. But… No standing in aisles, No standing at rails, No standing in chairs; are management rules. When a patron is told these rules and they ignore you, control is needed. Get Special Event Team (SET) or an officer 243-4000 or 243-6131. Know where other Security Staff are located throughout the building and how to get in touch with though radio contact or eye contact.
Locations • Before your shift starts you should familiarize your self with: • Concessions • Restrooms • Family restrooms with baby changing stations. • Disability restrooms • Elevators • Smoking sections • Alcohol sales (concerts) • Emergency exits, fire extinguishers, pull stations
Monitoring The Crowd • Monitoring the crowd in your area and the concourses, all of your surroundings. • Be aware of the crowd behaviors, moods, etc. • Stay in your area unless directed to go somewhere else. • Don’t judge a person by there looks, background (race) or how they are dressed. • If you need crowd control call a Uniformed Officer or Special Event Team Member (SET) 243-4000 or 243-6131.
Campus Security • You need to know how to get in touch with Campus Security, 243-4000 or 243-6131. • If you encounter fighting, unruly behavior and or someone who has had too much to drink call Campus Security.
Exit Doors • The doors that say No Re-Entry are exit doors only. There are some exceptions. The smoking sections and Student entry for Basketball games are just some examples. You will be told before the event what is expected. • Make sure these doors are locked, if not get the key to lock them. • Make sure no one enters these doors if they are not being used for an entrance. • Know the re-entry rules and enforce them.
Non-Public Places • Know credentials needed for the event and be aware of the non-public access areas. Make sure patrons, staff, etc. are not where they shouldn’t be. • If someone is where they shouldn’t be, you will want to Be Calm, Courteous, and Very Firm. • Call Campus Security if you need to. 243-4000 or 243-6131
Incidents • If someone falls, call for help, stay with them until help arrives. Call the Event Manager or your supervisor then fill out an Adams Center Incident Report. Be very accurate, with an objective description on the incident. Don’t interpret intention or emotional status. Do describe behaviors and actions. • If there is a Fire stay calm and direct patrons to the exits. If a Disaster occurs follow Emergency Protocol as seen in the General Information section of the All Staff Information PowerPoint.
Thank you! The Adams Center Event Staff
