  2. Dwarf Periwinkle • Scientific name; Vinca Minor • It’s a viny bush that spreads along the ground and roots itself to other plants, and takes over • In many parts of North America dwarf periwinkle is considered an “invasive species • Grown for dense habitat that smothers most weeds • Commonly grown as a ground cover in gardens • The bush occasionally scrambles up to 40 centimeters high, but never twining or climbing • The plant is native to Central and Southern Europe and Southwestern Asia • Other common names; Small or Common periwinkle , Myrtle or Creeping Myrtle in United States

  3. Dwarf Periwinkle; Leaves and Flowers • Flowers: • Produced from early Spring to late September , some still grow in Autumn • Colors: Violet/purple, white or light purple in some situations • Flowers contain five petals • Leaves: • Dark evergreen colored • Have a soft, leathery texture, waxy

  4. Dwarf Periwinkle; Medical Uses • The dried leaves, aerial parts, and sometimes the entire plant are used to help with blood circulation • Used to help metabolism in the brain • And to treat cardiovascular disorders ( heart disorders)

  5. Dwarf Periwinkle Cultivars • Cultivars are flowers that are chosen, there seeds re-planted, and the plants are normally bred for a certain color • “Argenteovariegata”- White leaf edges • “Aureovariegata”-Yellow leaf edges • “Gertrude Jekyll”-White flowers • “Plena”-Double flowers

  6. Getting Rid of Dwarf Periwinkle • Once Dwarf Periwinkle had rooted itself down, it’s very hard to get rid of • Dwarf periwinkles leaves are waxy, and the waxy leaves repel most water-based, plant killing sprays • To get rid of it, it has to be cut back, then immediately sprayed with herbicide spray • Chemical treatment may have to me repeated • Or, you can just pull it out from the roots
