Development of the Internet • December 1969 • Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) went online and connected 4 major American universities, which provided a link in case a military attack that destroyed communication systems • 1973 • Electronic mail introduced by a scientist in Cambridge, Massachusetts • 1976 • Jimmy Carter and his running mate use email to plan campaign events

  3. Development of the Internet (Continued) • 1982 • The term “Internet” is used for the first time* • 1985 • America Online debuts email, electronic bulletin boards, news and other information* • 1989 • Dial up internet • Tim Berners- Lee dubs “The World Wide Web”

  7. “Global Village” • Term coined by Marshall McLuhan • Explains how the world is connected because of electronic technology • People are able to be connected at the click of a mouse • Colleges • Scientists • Hospitals • Friends • Family • People half way across the globe using the Internet

  8. Mass Media • Cellphones, Blackberries, iPhones, AIM, Skype, Chatrooms, MySpace, Facebook make it easy to connect.

Societal Impact • Children born after 1985 don’t remember a life without cellphones, computer and the internet • Some studies show that too much screen time can be damaging to a child’s physical health (such as obesity) and cognitive development • Children under the age of 5 shouldn’t need play with anything “electronic” • Impairs creativity
