  2. Saddam Hussein / Iraq Genocide • In the late 1980’s Saddam Hussein was accused of killing between 200,000 and 500,000 men, women, and children. • Saddam Hussein also invaded Kuwait and Iran • Was responsible for the destruction of towns.

  3. The Iraqi Kurds • To Saddam Hussein the Kurdish people were seen as a threat. • He believed that the Kurdish would take over Iraq, and he did not like the Kurdish people. • He also felt that the Kurds would try to take over neighboring countries Syria, Turkey, and Iran

  4. Al-Anfal Campaign • Hussein was afraid of a Kurdish uprising. • Did not want Kurds to take over. • He felt the need to remove the threat. Map of Iraqi, Iranian, and Turkish area inhabited by the Kurdish.

  5. Halabja Poison Gas Massacre • The Kurdish town of Halabja was sprayed with a poisonous gas. • Most notorious attack. • The attack killed between 3,200 to 5,000 people. • More than 10,000 were injured • Thousands of others died later from disease or of birth defects.

  6. facts • Hussein killed around 182,000 Kurdish citizens. • Abducted 8,000 KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) members. • It was thought that Hussein was in possession of WMD’s, but none were found. • Hussein was known for his use of chemical weapons.

  7. Argument • The penalties and charges placed against Saddam Hussein were justified because of the crimes he committed.

  8. Supporting ideas • Saddam Hussein was hanged on December 30, 2006 at 6:05P.M. Baghdad time. • He was charged with murder, genocide. • Human rights abuses. • And was charged for the killing of 148 Shiites.
