Chapter 2 • Scout’s 1st day at school • Ms. Caroline Fisher (roomed at Ms. Maudie’s) • Scout’s 3 mistakes • Can read(Atticus taught her) • Ms. Caroline is upset Scout learned to read without the benefit of any educational system • Can write (Calpurnia taught her) • Ms. Caroline is upset- first grader’s print • Explains that the Cunningham’s are poor • Too proud to accept a handout • Scout’s knuckles are hit with a ruler
Chapter 3 • Scout fights Walter Cunningham- blames him for her punishment • Jem invited Walter to lunch • Scout learns • Cunningham's are poor but honest • Pay debts with firewood, nuts, holly • Atticus treats Walter like an honored guest • Calpurnia makes Scout leave the table • All guests must be treated with courtesy and respect • Atticus tells Scout “ You never really understand a person until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” • That the law is rigid for “common folk” but it is bent in certain ways for the Ewells (live like animals) • Only attend school on the first day • Are allowed to hunt out of season • Scout begs Atticus to let her quit school • Compromise- Scout returns to school and they will continue reading every night as they’ve been • Introduced to one member of the Ewell family • Burris- “cooties”
Chapter 4 • Scout finds 2 pieces of gum in the tree near the Radley house • On the last day of school, Scout and Jem find 2 Indian head pennies • Add to the mystery of the Radley house • Dill arrives for the summer • Tire roll • Jem is annoyed at Scout for disagreeing with him and gives her an extra hard push • Scout lands near the Radley front porch • She hears laughter inside; doesn’t tell Jem or Dill • Favorite summertime game: reenacting scenes of the Radley family • Scout eventually wants to quit the game because • Atticus suspects what they’re doing • She heard laughter (someone is watching them) • Ni**er- in the 1930s- this was a common word used in the South
