Helping Students with Visual Impairments Succeed in Band Levi Thompson EdPsy 390
Music: an elitist class? • Music requires many different skills and functions • Teachers can provide accommodations to help students overcome impairments
Research • ‘Exploring the impact of congenital visual impairment on the development of absolute pitch using a new online assessment tool: A preliminary study”’ • ‘Enriching the Ensemble Experience for Students with Visual Impairments’ • ‘Accommodating Band Students with Visual Impairments’
Facts • Students took a pitch identification test • Visually impaired vs. Normal vision • Students with visual impairments performed better • Mean score with normal vision: 8.27 • Mean score with visually impaired: 16.58 • Heightened senses
What Can We Do? • Figure out how functional the student’s vision is • Figure out the type of learners you have • Visual, Auditory, Tactual
Visual • Have some vision, but may have trouble seeing normal print • Enlarge print • Seat student closer to the front
Auditory • Can learn better by listening • Record a certain passage that they need to learn • Direct verbal instruction
Tactual • Student learns through his or her sense of touch • Braille music code • Textured markers on instrument • Student guide
All Teachers • Individual attention is key! • Take time to understand each student’s individual needs • Accommodate • Give them the same opportunities as everyone else
