The Periodic Table has trends. • Groups or Families have similar chemical properties. • Reactivity increases moving from right to left. 1. Group 1 the most reactive 2. Group 18 the least reactive C.Cations form on the Left side of the table. Anions form on the Right side.
Cations = (+) Positive Ions produced by electrons being lost or taken away by other atoms. 2. Anions = (-) Negative Ions produced by electrons being gained from other atoms.
II. Classifying Elements A. Elements are grouped according to their properties. 1.luster — Metallic Shininess 2. ductile — Can be made into a wire. 3. malleable — Can be bent or shaped.
B. Metalsare the elements that have luster, ductile, and are malleable. Ex. copper, aluminum, gold, iron, silver, chromium, nickel Metals makeup more than 75% of the elements in the periodic table
C. The Transition Elements make good alloys 1. ALLOYS = mixture of more than one metal. a. Steel = Fe, Ni, Cr b. Brass= Cu, Zn c. Bronze = Cu, Sn
D. Nonmetals are elements with low luster, not ductile or malleable. About 1/5 of the periodic table are nonmetals There are 17 nonmetals in the periodic table Ex. Sulfur, Neon, Argon
E. The elements with properties of metals and nonmetals are called metalloids. Ex. Carbon, Silicon and Germanium The eight metalloids are B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te, Po and At.
