IAN Page 35Solubility Main Ideas1. Dilute Solution 2. Saturation Point3. Solubility Objective Identify and apply variables of solubility using inquiry through notes, graphs and collaboration.
I. Strength of solutions can vary A. Solution Concentration depends on the amount of solute. 1. Add / increase solute = increase concentration of solution 2. Add / Increase solvent = decrease concentration of solution (dilute solution!)
3. Saturation Point = The point where a solution cannot dissolve anymore solute Saturation Point
B. Solubility = the measure of how well a solute dissolves in solution. Examples; 1. Salt (Ionic Compound) has high solubility in Water 2. Carbon Dioxide (Covalent Compound) has low solubility in Water
C. Solvent Solubility can change. 1. Increase solvent temp.=Increase solid solute’s solubility (Ex. Candy) 2. Increase solvent temp.=Decrease gas solute’s solubility (Ex. Soda in hot weather) 3. Increase solution pressure=Increase gas solute’s solubility(Ex. The Bends)

Title GRAPH GRAPH GRAPH Question Question Question Hypothesis Hypothesis Hypothesis
Column #1 Question Write the following question under the title QUESTION. How does temperature affect a solid solute’s solubility?
Column #1 Hypothesis Create a hypothesis using the graph to help you write a IF…THEN…BECAUSE hypothesis. Write a hypothesis explaining what will happen to the solubility of fructose (A type of sugar) as the temperature of water increases.
Column #2 Question Write the following question under the title QUESTION. How does pressure affect a gas solute’s solubility?
Column #2 Hypothesis Create a hypothesis using the graph to help you write a IF…THEN…BECAUSE hypothesis. Write a hypothesis explaining what will happen to the solubility of Nitrogen (A type of gas) as pressure increases in the blood stream of a diver.
Column #3 Question Write the following question under the title QUESTION. How does an increase in temperature affect a gas solute’s solubility?
Column #3 Hypothesis Create a hypothesis using the graph to help you write a IF…THEN…BECAUSE hypothesis. Write a hypothesis explaining what will happen to the solubility of Oxygen (A type of gas) as temperature increases in a lake during the summer.
