Luke 16:18 1. In its literary context, Jesus is saying, “Though the Age of the (Mosaic) Law has passed and the Age of the Kingdom of God has arrived, God’s Law is not nullified. But you have nullified it, as seen in your treatment of marriage and divorce.” 2. In timeless truth, Jesus is saying, “In God’s eyes, marriage survives an unbiblical divorce.”
Luke 16:18 "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.” Divorce + Remarriage = Adultery If adultery is sex in violation of an existing marriage covenant, then the 1st marriage had to survive the divorce for remarriage to be adulterous.
Jesus on Divorce "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.”(Luke 16:18) "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.“ (Mark 10:11-12)
Jesus on Divorce “But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” (Matthew 5:32) “And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9)
Matthew 19:1-11 • Question1 (v. 3) A. “tested him” • “lawful” (Mosaic Law) • “for any cause” (Deut. 24:1)
“When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce” (Deut 24:1) Question: What is “some indecency”? School of Shammai: marital infidelity School of Hillel: broad allowance – speaking to men on the street, having hair down, bad cooking. Rabbi Akiba allowed divorce if a man found another woman more attractive.

Remarriage (after divorce) is never permitted. • Divorce (with right to remarry) is permitted by God for sexual immorality (Matthew; porneia; Jer. 3:8). • Divorce (with right to remarry) is permitted for sexual immorality (Matthew) and abandonment by an unbelieving spouse (1 Cor. 7:15).
