WHAT DO COSTUMERS DO? And what’s the big deal about it, anyway?
COSTUMERS MUST… 1. Read the script and know the characters
COSTUME “NEED-TO-KNOW” • Costumes convey information about the character to the audience. • What kind of information???
Clothes can immediately communicate… • Position and status • Gender • Occupation • Occasion • A bit about personality (is the person flamboyant? Modest? Independent? A conformist? Etc.)
What different ways could SANTA CLAUS be portrayed as a character?
COSTUMERS MUST… 2. Know the LOCATION (setting).
COSTUMERS MUST… 3. Know the TIME
COSTUMERS MUST… 4. Know the ACTION in each scene.
RESEARCH! • After a designer reads the script, they meet with the director to discuss their plans.
RESEARCH! • Then, they can begin to RESEARCH the costume design…

Costumes should be carefully planned… Inspiration from artand imagination
RENDERING • A rendering is a detailed visual of a costume, prop, set, etc • Renderings are drawn by the designers and reflect their own personal artistic style. • Renderings can be labeled with materials.
Did you know…? • Costumers have to “age” brand new clothing? (WHY? HOW?) Distressing
