P09454: Design & Testing of Centrifugal Pump Components MSD I – Mid Project Presentation Winter 08/09
Design Team: • Rishitha Dias - ISE – Project Manager • Kevin Klucher - ME – Lead Engineer • John Hayles - ME • Reme Meck - ME • Ammar Jangbarwala - ME
Project Background: • Project Family: Sustainable Technologies for the Global Marketplace • Project Track: Flow Visualization • Sponsor: Dresser-Rand Corp. • Faculty Guide: Dr. S. Day
Project Deliverable: The goal of the project is to design, build, test and deliver to KGCOE, a centrifugal pump system for particle imaging velocimetry studies, which can be used both as a teaching tool for undergraduate students as well as a research tool for graduate and faculty researchers.
Customer Needs: Primary Customers: • Faculty & Graduate Researches • Undergraduate Instructors Customer Needs / Target Specifications: • Generate Multiple Flows ~ 3 Unique Impeller Designs ~ 2 Unique Diffuser Designs • PIV Compatibility >85% Transmissivity of Pump Components • Lab Teaching Tool < 5 min Impeller change out time > 0.45” Tool Clearance Measureable Flow, Pressure & Power. Must withstand a drop from 42”
Existing Pump System: Sensors & Actuators GUI Close-up view of Pump Housing & Impeller Tank
Design Concept: Interchangeable Diffuser Interchangeable Impeller
Risk Item: High Risk: Part Manufacturing • Machining acrylic to make impellers is challenging • Complex impeller designs are costly to manufacture Risk Mitigation: • Manufacture impeller blades separately and glue to back-plate • Use Rapid Prototyping for complex geometries
High Risk: Technology • Impeller/Diffuser Performance will not meet desired levels • GUI I/O control for motor needs to be implemented Risk Item: Risk Mitigation: • Use empirical results to improve component design • Seek assistance from Faculty Consultant
Overall Progress: • Platform: The existing pump system is functioning at an acceptable level. • Schedule:The Design & Analysis is on schedule. Awaiting customer feedback to finalize. • Budget: $6,500, expected costs are $2,100, not including the machining costs • Performance: • Customer needs: On track to meet all customer needs, except Motor I/O control with GUI • Specification: On track to meet all specifications, except Pump Efficiency levels
Product development Phase: Current Stage of Design Phase 1 Planning Phase 2 Concept Development System Level Design Phase 3 Testing & Refinement Phase 4 MSD I MSD II
MSD II Milestones: • Week 1 End: Improve Impeller Designs using Empirical Data • Week 4 End: Completed Housing Assembly • Week 5 End: Complete Basic Testing of Sealing etc. • Week 6 End: Complete GUI I/O system • Week 8 End: Complete Pump Performance Testing • Week 9 End: Testing & Verification Finalized • Week 10 End: Documentation Finalized, Project Review
