  2. SOL Number and Number Sense Focus: Whole Number Concepts K.4 The student will a) count forward to 100 and backward from 10; b) identify one more than a number and one less than a number; and c) count by fives and tens to 100.

  3. 1- 2-3 peas • Baker, Keith. (2012). 1- 2- 3 peas. Beach Lane Books. • Reading Level: 1.0 (Flesh- Kincaid Grade level) • Description: This is a counting book that is a follow up to Bakers “LMNO Peas” book. The author uses the same little character peas as in his first book to show the concept of counting starting at 1 to 9 then counting by 10’s to 100. This book does a nice job of showing numbers in different ways. Each page displays a large representation of the number and allows students to count the pictures; giving them two different ways of a visualization. • Strategy: Strategy: Sequencing- in this activity, a book is shared with children, who are instructed to draw specific events (numbers) that occur in the story. Upon completion, the students tape their drawings together in proper sequence, crafting a personal reflection/ number line of the story.

  4. One Pup’s Up • Chall, M. W. (2010). One pup’s up. Simon &Schuster Children’s Publishing Division. • Reading Level: 2.9 (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level) • Description: One Pup’s up is a colorful picture book about counting to and backwards from ten. This book would be good to us as a read aloud because of its big and bold font and the pictures are clear and simple for young children. Children will love counting along as ten pups gradually wake up to nuzzle, wiggle, dine, and play. Children can use this book to help practice how to count by ones to ten and also how to count backwards from ten. • Strategy: Scavenger Hunt: After reading the book aloud together the students will then use the book to answer the following questions: 1) go back and count the different colored pups (example, the brown-spotted pups, the black-spotted pups, and any solid black, white, or brown pups.) How many can you find? 2) The puppies all enjoy playing with one certain toy. What is their favorite toy? Can you think of other toys puppies like to play with? 3) Find the pages where the pups are lined up to eat. How many dishes do you see? What colors are they? What kind of food does the author say the pups eat? 4) What do you think is the most fun about having a puppy?

  5. Cha Cha Chimps • Durango, J. (2006). Cha cha chimps. Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. • Reading Level: 5.5 (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level) • Description: Cha Cha Chimps focuses on how to count backwards from 10. This book highlights chimps as well as other animals as they dance and do the cha-cha. The left-hand-side of the book includes a short poem such as “Wearing shiny shoes and their boogie-woogie pants, they go to Mambo Jamba’s where they dance, dance, dance.”, while the right-hand-side of the book includes the rhyme “ee-ee-oo-oo-ah-ah-ah 10 little chimps do the cha-cha-cha.”. Each page throughout the book has the same rhyme so by the end of the story children should have no trouble repeating the rhyme and inserting the correct number. Children will find it hilarious to see all the different jungle animals doing the cha-cha. This is a wonderful book that will make counting fun for students. • Strategy: Strategy: Scavenger Hunt: After reading the book aloud together the students will then use the book to answer the following questions: 1) What is the title of the book? 2) Where do the monkeys go? Why? 3) How many monkeys chimps start out dancing? 4) Can you name all the animals in the story? 5) What instruments are in the story? Which one would you most like to play? 6) What does Mama do? Do you think the chimps will do it again? Why?

  6. NASCAR 1-2-3’s • Jacobs, P. D., & Swender, J. (2008). Nascar 1,2,3's. Layton,UT: Gibbs Smith. • Reading Level: 0.0 (Flesch- Kincaid Grade level) • Description: This book uses the NASCAR theme to teach counting. The numbers count by one to 10, by tens to 100, and then by 100’s to 1,000. This book also uses numerals, number words, and the appropriate number of items in the pictures. The use of numerals and number words will help students learn their numbers and counting! • Strategy: Concept Map: This concept map will focus on “Nascar 1, 2, 3’s”. Students will find examples of different numbers throughout the book and draw or write the numbers in the concept map. Then students will discuss with a partner what numbers they drew/ wrote on their maps.

  7. Monster Math • Miranda, A. (1999). Monster math. Scholastic Inc. • Reading level: Could Not Find (For ages 4-8 years old) • Description: This is a counting book that shows a little monster greeting guests arriving for a party. The numbers mount until there are 40 guests in all, however that is too many monsters for mother so she shoos them away. Ten leave at a time until there are only five monsters left. Then one at a time the five monsters leave until there is only one monster left with a huge mess! • Strategy: DRTA

  8. Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book • Morales, Y. (2003). Just a minute: A trickster tale and counting book . Chronicle Books. • Reading Level: 2.4 (Scholastic Book Wizard) • Description: Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book, is a tale about an old woman who is approached by a skeleton man trying to get her to come with him. The woman tricks the skeleton man using both Spanish and English words to tally the party preparations she has to complete to cleverly delay her trip. This book is the perfect introduction to counting in both English and Spanish. Students will be able to reinforce counting as well as learn how to count in both English and Spanish. This would be a wonderful book to include in a multi-lingual classroom and it helps to establish diversity as acceptable in a classroom. • Strategy: Sequencing: After reading the story students will be given a list of all the party preparations the old woman completed and will place them in the correct order she completed them in.

  9. 100 Days of Cool • Murphy, S. J. (2004). 100 days of cool. New York, NY: Harper Collins. • Reading Level: 2.6 level (Scholastic Book Wizard) • Description: This is the story about several kids in Mrs. Lopez’s class that mistake her saying they are going to celebrate 100 days of school for 100 days of cool. When one child in the class doubts they can dress “cool” the students accept the challenge and become very creative to think of 100 different outfits. • Strategy: Writing - after reading the story, the students would be asked to write a new part of the story, telling how the children are cool on one of the days not mentioned in the story.

  10. One Nighttime Sea • Rose, D. L. (2003). One nighttime sea. New York: Scholastic Press. • Reading Level: 2.4 (Scholastic Book Wizard) • Description: One Nighttime Sea, is a simple picture and counting book that can be read aloud to students to help familiarize them with counting forward and backwards to and from ten. Each page includes a picture of the number, writes the number, and then a picture of that many sea animals. Readers start going up to ten and then count backwards from ten back to one. This book would be great to get young students thinking about counting backwards from ten. Young students will love acting out the action words throughout the story that are associated with each animal, while counting all the creatures from one to ten, and then from ten back down to one. • Strategy: Matching Activity: After reading the book students will be given a worksheet were they have to match the different animals from the story to the number of them that were in the book.

  11. Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of kindergarten • Slate, J. (2002). Miss Bindergarten celebrates the 100th day of kindergarten. Picture Puffins. • Reading Level: 2.4 (Scholastic Book Wizard) • Description:Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten, is about the 100th day of Kindergarten. Throughout the story the teacher and her students are getting ready to celebrate the 100th day of Kindergarten. Each student has to collect 100 items to bring to school on the 100th day of school. Readers will follow along as all 26 students in the classroom counts and brings 100 things to school. The book includes rhyming throughout and colorful pictures that display all the items the students collect for the special day. This would be a great book to help young students practice counting to 100. • Strategy: After reading the story aloud together the students will write about what they would bring to school for the 100th day of school.

  12. Ready, Set, 100th Day! • Wallace, N.E. (2011). Ready, set, 100th day!. Marshall Cavendish Corporation. • Reading Level: 12.0 (Flesch- Kincaid Grade Level) • Description: Minna is a rabbit who has to come up with an idea to represent the 100th day of school. She starts out by counting groups of five sticks and has her brother help her out. As the story continues, Minna with the help of her family come up with different ways to create 100 by the grouping of different materials. • Strategy: modeling (read- aloud)
