December 2007 Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company is formally established Partnership between Glasgow City Council (GCC), South Lanarkshire Council (SLC), Scottish Enterprise (SE) and the Scottish Government. Project with a lifespan up to 2028. Looking to achieve unparalleled social, economic and physical change across an area that is 840 hectares in size of which 350 hectares is vacant and derelict or has problems with infrastructure and contamination.
Why December 2007?? Decline in the area showing no sign of reversing while other parts of Glasgow were improving After 30 years in the planning, a new motorway through the area is finally given approval Glasgow won the right to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games : 17 sports, 6,500 athletes and officials Bid for the Commonwealth Games emphasised event would be catalyst for regeneration
What is Regeneration? “Regeneration is a set of activities that reverse economic, social and physical decline in areas where market forces will not do this without support from government” Definition is taken from the Review of sub-national economic development and regeneration, HM Treasury, Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, and Communities and Local Government: July 2007

How best to tackle the issues? Clyde Gateway The Future… All partners committed to continued progress with funding promises Scottish Government ‘shovel ready’ funding and ERDF support have been provided for projects in Bridgeton, Rutherglen and Shawfield JV partners committed to further investment. Forestry Commission Scotland committed to new £5m project for new urban woodland at Cuningar And much much more in the pipeline……

Clyde Gateway East Phase 2 will begin in late 2013 Phase 3 to follow in 2015 When completed will be £35 project Capacity for up to 1000 jobs

Clyde Gateway The Future… Our Operating Plan…..supported by our partners at Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and Scottish Enterprise….all of whom have signed up for long-term commitment to the project It’s about building on the jobs and training places we’ve created for local people It’s about continuing to build links with the local schools It’s about continued and sustainable physical change.
