Chapter 1 Professional Architectural Careers, Office Practices, and Opportunities
Introduction • Architectural drafting and design satisfies many interests • Theoretical problem solving • Artistic creations • Creating something practical while working with your hands
Architectural Career Options Chief Architect Checker Sr. Architect Architect Tech Writer Model Maker/ Illustrator Engineer Designer Interior Designer Lead Drafter Draftsman
Education/ skill requirements: • CAD Skills (AutoCAD, Soft Plan, Google Sketch-up, ArchiCAD, REVIT, etc.) • Math • Communication verbal and written • Artistic Creation • Architecture History • Construction Knowledge (Hands on is best) • Spatial Reasoning • Theoretical Problem Solving • Working in Groups
Architect • Must be licensed to practice • Designs High End residential and commercial buildings • Masters degree required • 5 years of apprenticeship before eligible to take professional exam to get stamp • Project Manager • Artist • Construction Supervisor • Level I,II,III, Associate, Principal • Top 5 careers favored by women looking for a man
Engineer • Work is more technical and requires high level of math and science • Masters or Doctorate degree required • A variety of engineering fields available • Civil • Structural • Electrical • Required to pass an examination for certification
Drafter- requires attention to detail Beginning - Entry level position to gain experience and skill (Redlines or simple sketches) Experienced - Expected to make construction decisions based on initial designs • Modifies existing Designs Lead – Work heavily with architect to develop design • Familiarity with codes and vendor catalogs (Work with City and State Departments)
Designer • States restrict title use • Formal training and a competency test • Responsibilities • Based on education and experience • Coordinates team of drafters • May work under an architect or engineer • Generally work in an office setting
Interior Decorator • Meet with clients to determine project scope • Review and measure spaces • Prepare proposed room layouts and estimates • Provide samples • Arrange and oversee painting, wallpapering, and flooring • Select and purchase furnishings and items • Space planning
Kitchen and Bath Designer- Residential construction • Illustrator - Combines artistic and architectural skills to produce drawings • Model Maker - Follows plans to build scale models
Related careers • Specification Writer - Understands the construction process to write necessary details of the plans (FFKR example) • City Planner/ Inspector - Checks plans to ensure codes and laws have been followed
Design Basics • Stock plan or Custom • Time to design a home • Few Days up to a year or more • Considerations • Financial (Cost per square foot) Labor and Material • Location (Cost variations) • FHA loan • CC&R’s • Site (Improved or raw) • Tastes (Toilet cost between $30 and $300)
Design Process • Preliminary Design Studies/ Room Planning – Following the research, bubble drawings and scaled sketches are created • Rooms must be considered throughout this stage and may include room usage, furniture layout, and size requirements
Design Process • Initial Working Drawings - A drafter begins to make working drawings that include the foundation, plot, roof, electrical, cabinet, and framing plans • Final Design Considerations - A conference with the client is needed to discuss the initial working drawings
Design Process • Engineering- Plans are sent to licensed civil engineer to stamp plans after checking to see if all structural members are sufficient to support structure. • Permit Procedures - Once all plans are complete appropriate permits must be secured before construction begins • Job Supervision - Although not usually done by the designer, sometimes he/she is required to go to the site and solve problems. • Changes- Although people never change their minds this occasionally happens.
