So what can we do to lift Pacifika achievement? • Some aspects are beyond our control: • Frequent absence • Lack of value of education • Lack of family support
Some we can influence: • Having Pasifika teachers in the school as role models • Having a mentoring system • Making sure there are opportunities to express the culture such as polyfest.
Some is within our control: • Getting to know your students • Personal encouragement • Breaking things down into meaningful chunks • Giving help with time management • Setting milestones with internal assessment • Having high expectations • Making the learning relevant • Mixing up the learning styles – not just writing • Being positive • Interact with students – walk around and talk to them • Making it fun with food prizes!
