The History • September 11, 2001 – unexpected terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center • November 2001 – Transportation Safety Administration created (TSA) • June 2002 – Homeland Security Act proposed as a result 9/11 • January 2003 – Operations began • January 2004 – US-VISIT introduced, requiring foreign travelers to be photographed and to have fingerprints scanned • 2007 – Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: requiring passports • Christmas 2009 – Infamous “Underwear Bomber”
