  1. We finish grammar today :( To finish our two month long discussion of grammar, today we will discuss some misc grammatical modules which are still important to know about for college level writing. Misc Grammar

  2. The most frequent use of quotation marks is for a direct quote, whether spoken or written, from an outside source. In 1982, the band Suicidal Tendencies, “was voted best, and worst, band of the year” in Flipside Magazine's annual poll. See note for other uses of quotation marks and some comments about their usage. Quotation Marks!

  3. Direct quotes present exact words copied from an original source of less than four lines. According to Signifying Nothing Fanzine, the band Tragedy, “is the best band of the past decade.” Block quotes are quotes that are more than three (poetry) or four (prose) lines. They are not enclosed in quotation marks, are displayed on a new line, tabbed over twice, and introduced via a colon. I asked Dave Koenig from Hardware Fanzine about his favorite books: I’m not that big on fiction...but Robert Bloch is great. I love Harlan Ellison as a personality, because he is so outspoken. I love anime and my all time favorite is Project A-KO. (Par. 14) Types of Quotes

  4. Use quotes around short, less than three lines, quotations of poetry. Emily Dickinson once wrote, “the soul selects her own society” (467). If you have more than one, but less than three, lines of poetry quoted, use a slash to signify their division. My favorite lines in Borges' poem “Legend” are, “was it you that killed me, or did I kill you? / Abel answered. I don't remember any more; here we are, together, like before” (34). Direct dialogue will be handled the same way you would for citing a direct quote. Poetry

  5. A dash in an interruption to a sentence which adds information. Like parentheses, dashes can set off that extra writing in a sentence. Alice The Cat dreams of---many nights---adventures with pirates and bumblebees. Hypertext fiction---a form of electronic literature---was very popular online during the mid to late nineties. Use dashes sparingly! Dashes!

  6. Parentheses interrupt a sentence to add many kinds of information. Unlike dashes, however, they are used for deemphasis. There are three reasons to use parentheses: Explanations The first band to play the show () played to a half filled VFW hall. Examples Some of the bands interviewed in her fanzine () are playing the show today. Asides All day long he puts together copies with a glue stick and scissors (that must be boring) and then drives to Kinkos to make copies. Parentheses

  7. Occasionally, you may need to use brackets in your writing. There are a few ways you can do this. Changing, or adding, a few words of a quote to fit the structure of your paper. According to Koenig, “They [] are the best band.” Put the Latin word sic (thus) in brackets next to an error in something you want to quote. Here is an example from The DK Handbook: The student wrote that, “The Vikings came to North America long before Columbus' arrival in 1942 [sic].” Brackets

  8. Ellipsis are a series of three spaced dots to show you are leaving out bits of a writer's original words. Shelley Jackson's work...has been called essential reading by leading critics like Scott Esposito. Ellipsis

  9. Ugh, don't use exclamation points. It makes your argument sound immature. Don't use exclamation points to give commands in your writings. Readers don't like being bullied by the author. Exclamation Points!!!!!!!

  10. Other Issues/Pet Peeves... • Modern usage has deemed using “his or her” more appropriate than “their” when talking about people of both genders. • Everyone needs to make sure his or her grammar exam questions are submitted by the due date. • Accepted is a verb meaning an agreement to a situation, while excepted is a preposition involving exclusion. • His resume was accepted despite a glaring typo.

  11. More Issues... • In general, well is an adverb (modifying a verb) and good is an adjective (modifying a noun). • Rosemary did well tweeting during the panel. • "I am good," he replied to Dr. Berube. • Then is used when something is "versus" something else. Than is used for a comparison. • Lauren called Kristen, then she prepared for their date on Friday night. • Sean is a better gamer than Nicole.

  12. Finally... • There contains "here" and, thus, indicates location. Their conveys possession. They're is a contraction of "they are." • Alice The Cat is sleeping over there. • Henry and Angela collaborated on their conference presentation over Skype.
