  2. Printmaking Earlier in the year we discussed the various aspects of printmaking. This project will focus upon printing using hand-made stencils on paper and t-shirts. *IMPORTANT* The point of printmaking is to reproduce an image or text as many times as possible. By doing this, more and more people are able to view the image.

Printmaking in History 888, China- The Diamond Sutra, a Buddhist scripture, was the first dated example of block printing. 1436- German inventor Johannes Gutenberg Invented the printing press with moveable type. http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventions/printpress.htm 1500’s Europe-Artists began using printmaking for their art (such as engraving, block printing, and etching).   10. Graffiti History in a nutshell… Graffiti (as an underground art form) is said to have started in Philadelphia in the mid to late 1960’s, and moved to New York City around the same time. Since then it has evolved from the original look, although the principles and ideas have remained the same.

  14. Stencil Graffiti history in a nutshell… French artist ‘Blek le Rat’ Began dabbling with graffiti After visiting New York in the 1970’s, and seeing the work there. He wanted to do something different with his style of graffiti, therefore being one of the pioneers in creating the stencil graffiti style. Most Stencil Graffiti artists use the medium as a way to address a social issue or to display a “witty” or “humorous” message. Or both.

  15. The Basic Stencil,same concept applies to Stencil Graffiti.

  16. How does this relate to T-shirts?

  17. After we print our stencils on paper, we will use screen-printing ink (for fabric) to print onto our t-shirts.

  18. Your Project: • - Students will make editions (5 prints ea.) based on 2 • primary images. You can do more if you want, and I approve • - These primary images must be approved • by the teacher. No gang, sexual, profane, drug, violent, • or inappropriate imagery will be tolerated or accepted. • time to be creative and use your thinking skills. • You are trying to convey a message without being obvious… • Remember when we discussed terms such as SYMBOLISM and • “illustrating social issues?” You may have a serious or • also have a humorous approach. • -You will have to back up your imagery choices by writing • TWO-PARAGRAPHS about why you are doing what you are doing. • We will begin printing on paper, then move into printing on • fabric, then T-Shirts.

  19. Your Images are to be no smaller than • 8.5 x 11 inches. • We will be using Adobe Photoshop to make • adjustments, then printing the images in • order to create the stencils. • Further instruction and demos will be provided • Throughout the following weeks.

  20. Disclaimer: Legal vs. Illegal What we are doing in this project is LEGAL. Using spray paint and marking property without permission is ILLEGAL. If you are commissioned to create a piece on property that is LEGAL. The use and sale of Spray Paint in the city of Chicago is ILLEGAL. We will be using water-based Printing ink and Fabric printing ink, which is LEGAL. WARNING: We will also be using X-Acto blades to cut our stencils. YOU MUST BE PATIENT AND CAREFUL.
