  2. CODE OF CONDUCT • The class will be split up into two teams. • A problem will be presented that is worth a certain number of points. • After a set amount of time, a member will be random selected from each team to present their work and answer. • The points will go to whichever team is correct. • If both teams are correct, a count will be done to determine which team has the most members with the correct answer. The team with the highest number correct will get the points. • If neither team is correct, each team will offer up a tribute.

  4. Possible Points: Round 1 • Among 13,200 submitted abstracts that were blindly evaluated (with authors and institutions not identified), 26.7% were accepted for publication. Among 13,433 abstracts that were not blindly evaluated, 29.0% were accepted (based on data from “Effect of Blinded Peer Review on Abstract Acceptance,” by Ross, et al., Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 295, No. 14). Use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the acceptance rate is the same with or without blinding.

  5. Possible Points: Round 2 • Listed below are Reading Ease scores taken from randomly selected pages in J. K. RowlingsHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. (Higher scores indicate writing that is easier to read.) Use a 0.02 significance level to test the claim that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is easier (µ1 > µ2) to read than War and Peace.

  6. Possible Points: Round 3 • The following table shows the weights of nine subjects before and after following a particular diet for two months. You wish to test the claim that the diet is effective in helping people lose weight at the 0.01 significance level.

  7. Possible Points: Round 4 • In a study of the effects of marijuana use, light and heavy users of marijuana in college were tested for memory recall with the results given below (based on data from the Journal of the American Medical Association). Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claims that the population of heavy marijuana users has a standard deviation different from that of light users. • Items sorted correctly by light users: n=64, x=53.3, s=3.6 • Items sorted correctly by heavy users: n=65, x=51.3, s=4.5
