Employer Engagement-The BSc in Financial Planning By Peter Prowse
The History • Careers links with local Financial Advisory Firms in Bradford and west Yorkshire • Formation of IFAs and those across the UK to address the sector’s needs and develop programmes which will be needed as the sector enters a massive period of change. • The Yorkshire Independent Financial Advisor Forum (YIFA)was formed in 2008 and has a membership of over 200 IFAs in the North. • Its initiative is supported by several leading insurers, the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Personal Finance Society (PFS). • The forum is already engaging with the over 7,000 IFAs across the UK with the aim of improving skills within the sector. • Supported by Head of Industry Development at AEGON UK
The 2008 Meeting • The School of Management invited the Bradford Initiative members, the CIII and School of Management staff (Via Escalate Champion). • After research and offer of placements for students on the BSc it was decided to agree to design the BSc subject to student demand. • Evidence from Bradford companies and Yorkshire of future need for more highly qualified staff in CII and with financial expertise.
The New BSc Financial Planning in 2010 • Bradford graduates will come out with not only a BSc but also the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII)'s Certificate in Financial Planning and substantial credits towards the CII’s Diploma in Financial Planning. • The degree will therefore provide the graduates with a fast-track route towards Chartered Financial Planning Status. • The degree will have a one-year placement; hence on completion graduates will also have real, practical experience, thus making them highly desirable to future employers. • They will be encouraged to return to work in their final year to gain additional expertise and paid work ready for their career. • Will retain jobs in the region with a supply of potential local recruits • Links with regional shortages, local companies and a entry level for financial graduates who do not want a career in Accountancy.
Regional Experience • Clear links with careers and supply of local students • Possible links with other colleges as entry levels to the BSc provided we accept their Foundation Programmes (to be decided) • For CII and PFS Professional accreditation: • Not many changes to major BSc-Core level 1 same • Level 2 Core Modules • Placement plus Professional exams and competency assessment • Level 3 requires 3 new modules
And Finally... • Enhanced Links in Bradford and region • First Professional entry in the region • Placements guaranteed but subject to interviews (as usual) • Strong links with University and local organisations • Links local students and keeps key jobs in region
