Net Energy Metering • Arrangement between the utility and consumer that allows the consumer to install renewable fuel generation on the consumer’s premise and interconnect it with the utility’s distribution grid

Net Metering - Virginia • Virginia Legislature ordered the Virginia SCC to investigate and promulgate rules and regulations regarding net metering for investor owned utilities, and cooperatives • Renewable Generator Capacity should be sized near equal to the consumer’s load or usage
Net Metering - Virginia • Residential - up to 10 kW maximum nameplate generator capacity • Non-residential – up to 500 kW maximum nameplate generator capacity
Net Metering - Virginia • Renewable Generator Installation and Interconnection must comply with: • National Electrical Code Article 690 • Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Standard 1547 • Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards
Net Metering - Virginia • Interconnection Requirements • Application for interconnection • Unit must automatically disconnect from utility for loss of utility source • Manual disconnect near utility meter • Installation by a licensed electrician • County inspection • Utility inspection • General Liability Insurance
Net Metering - Virginia • Net user of energy during the month results in a bill for the net kWh used • Net generator of energy for the month will result in a credit toward usage during the next month
Net Metering - Virginia • When consumer is a net generator for the year • Consumer can enter into a purchase agreement with the cooperative • Cooperative will purchase net kWh of generation at the avoided wholesale cost for energy during the period • Others should refer to the Terms and Conditions of service for their electric service provider
