Thinking skills Literacy skills Skills of analysis & evaluation Group Task In your small groups you are going to discuss these important issues where human rights may conflict: 1 The right to freedom from torture of an individual V the right to get vital information of a serious crime/ criminal. 2 The right to life V the right to be seen to be carrying out justice in the name of the many victims of all Qaeda Terrorist attacks 3 The right to a fair trial V the right to be seen to be carrying out world justice by killing a criminal even though it breaks international law. (NB: points 2 & 3 are linked ) The aim of this task is to get you discussing, debating, analysing and evaluating the key arguments for and against – not to all sit quietly & agree! 15 mins LO: To discuss/ debate conflict within human rights under international law. Literacy Task 15 mins Now you are going to write an article for the BBC news website on whether on either of the issues below: • The arguments for and against the right to use torture to gain the intelligence needed to locate Bin Laden? • Was it right to shoot an unarmed criminal rather than arrest and put on international trial. You must show both aspects of the argument eg not merely one side (biased) as the BBC must be impartial as it is the British Broadcasting Corporation paid by the public via the licence fee.
