Precipitation Precipitation is the formation of a solid in a solution during a chemical reaction. When the reaction occurs, the solid formed is called the precipitate, and the liquid remaining above the solid is called the supernate.
Exothermic reaction. • If a reaction releases more energy than it takes to keep it going, it is called an exothermic reaction. • The reaction produces heat. • Explosions are an example of the most violent form exothermic reactions.
Endothermic reaction • If a reaction requires a constant application of energy to keep it going, it is called an endothermic reaction. • The reaction produces a drop in temperature • A chemical cold pack consisting primarily of ammonium nitrate and water is endothermic.
An operational definition answers two questions • What do I do to tell when I have some of what I am defining? • What do I do to tell how much I have of what I am defining? • Use this information from yesterdays lab to answer question 4-26.
During today's lab look for and identify the following • A precipitate – formation of a solid from a solution • Endothermic reaction – produces a drop in temperature. • Exothermic reaction – a reaction that produces heat.
