  2. Whig Party • Established: 1834 opposed masons • Short for whiggamore it means to oppose royal tyranny • Opposed Andrew Jacksons party the Jacksonians • Whigs were the old federalist party supporting with preference to a strong federal national government

  3. Democratic Republican Party • Organized in 1792 • Founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison • They carried out George Mason’s beliefs • First opposition party

  4. Democratic Republican Party • Favored strong state government, lower taxes, support of agriculture and craftsmen • Its leaders held power between 1801 to 1825 • Inspired by the French Revolution (they wanted an anti-monarchical government) • It is the direct antecedent of the present democratic party
