  1. SNA.III.2Can CI help do better SN research?User Interfaces & Collaboration Services C. Plaisant (lead), B. Paley, D. Cox, C. Mueller, E. Adar, M. Piasecki, R. Holmes, D. Brandon, A. Wang Report from SNAC breakout sessionNovember 3, 2005

  2. UI needs for the CI (be a member of the community) • UI needs for SNA (do analysis)

  3. UI for the CI • r D • Hire a professional UI expert (also support staff later) • Lots of needs are common with other CI (e.g. registration or most collaboration tools) • What’s available? and by the way I have a Mac and I have a dataset with a million nodes… • Make visible what is invisible e.g. how public is this space? Privacy policies etc.

  4. UI for the SNA

  5. Know thy user… • Successful stories are focused on particular user groups >> Involve users in design and development • SNA is a methodology that spans multi disciplines (e.g. bio informatics, publications, DHS) • Datasets are very different in diff domains • Range of user types SNA Researchers/ avid SNA users/ intermittent or novice users

  6. Know the task/process Seems to be a common SNA process i.e. Data cleaning, extract, crude layout, design map, start again, and again Entity resolution, dealing with missing data, uncertainty Define it, facilitate it, teach it

  7. Tools needed • SNA bibliographic DL (ref only) >> bibliometric >> delineation • Map of SNA community (use your own tools!) • Present usage stats (that map is a good way to attract users) - Infrastructure to submit images and videos • Graph layout and interaction • Dynamic networks - studying change over time • Collaborative Visualization Tools synchronous or asynchronous – annotations etc.dealing with heterogeneous levels of expertise… • Helping people cross domain boundaries • Diff ontologies, glossaries

  8. Tools needed • History keeping of the analysis record, replay, annotate, edit, share • Multilevel interfaces from: simple GUIs to : you own code

  9. For scale Components for SNA

  11. Simpler UI

  12. After a while…

  13. Add own code

  14. Add own code

  15. Add own code

  16. other • Evaluation • How to measure insight / discoveries? • Longitudinal studies • Universal Access (range of expertise, various hardware, disabilities)

  17. Extra: next slide is if we want to discuss a killer “adoption app” i.e. something that attracts a lot of people, get them excited and satisfied they learned something quickly while having fun… Catherine
