INTERIOR Design8.00 Interpret levels of comfort and safety in home design.
8.01 Recognize ways to control comfort through air quality.

Air Purifier • Reduces inside air pollution • Removes dust, mold, bacteria, odors
Carbon Monoxide Detector • Detects the release of dangerous gas providing by burning fossil fuels
8.02 Classify home safety and security features.
Underwriters Laboratories seal • Found on electrical items means the tool meets certain safety standards
Security systems • Sensors to detect movement, usually located at windows and/or doors • Door viewer- you can see who is outside without physically going to look • Biometrics- touchpad to read who you are • Timers- Inexpensive safety device which can turn electrical items off and on at specific times
Fires • Smoke detectors- Batteries should be checked to see if they are working every six months to a year • Fire extinguishers- contents for one in the kitchen should contain specific chemicals in case of a grease fire
8.03 Recognize conservation components.
Natural elements • Trees and shrubs- can help isolated homes with wind break • Plants- certain plants can help conserve water because they use less water (this is called xeriscaping) • Sun- form of energy absorbed by the sun is called solar • Water- ultra low flush toilets conserve water; using sprinklers late at night and first thing in the morning • Hills- topography (way the land lays) is the practice of a home placed at the bottom of a hill so that it is protected from a cold North wind • Window placement- houses placed so windows face south to allow absorption of heat is called orientation
