Vichy Government • The Vichy government was the regime set up in France by Marshal Henri Pétain. • It was set up in July, 1940. • The Vichy government, which was never recognized by the Allies, became a tool in the hands of the German. • The Vichy government continued a shadowy existence, eventually fleeing before the Allies advanced.

Free French Forces • On June 17th, 1940 a broadcast went out on BBC radio asking for volunteers for the Free French Army. • At first it only contained volunteers from French communities in England and members of the French navy. • The name was changed from Free French Forces to Fighting French Forces. • By 1944 the Fighting French Forces grew to more than 300,000 troops

  4. The Splitting of France Viva les Resistance German Sympathizers The Vichy government would turn over Jewish citizens. Vichy government began the removal of Jews from professional situations before the invasion by Germany. • Charles De Gaulle became leader of all French resistance groups. • Contained many tinier resistances that united for the cause.

  5. Germans Against Jews • Germany took over French radios spreading anti-Semitic propaganda. • German border guards refused to let Jews back into German occupied zones. • German trusties were appointed to take over abandoned Jewish property
