Do Tonight! • 1.) Take Study Island Quiz: Physical and Chemical Properties • 2.) Write down as many homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures as you can find.
Properties of Matter Notes 2-4
Things you see and do not see in this room are made of matter
Pure Substances Compound • Two or more elements that are chemically combined. Example: NaCl (Salt), H2O (Water) • Element • This simplest form of a pure substance. • Example: Na (Sodium), Ne (Neon)
Compound or Element? • C12 H22 O11
Compound or Element? • NaCl – Table Salt
What is a mixture? A mixture is when 2 or more elements are joined physically
Watch This! • Fill in the blanks on your graphic organizer. • Watch to 5:46 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kezsLzyR-Pc
Homework Tonight • Go home and find as many examples as possible of homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. • Write a list and bring to class to share tomorrow!
Ways to measure matter: • 1.) Mass • 2.) Volume
What do you weigh on the moon? • You weigh 1/6 of what you weigh on earth. But your mass is the same. Why?
2.) Volume is the amount of space an object or substance takes up
There are 4 phases of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
Act it out! • Watch your classmates become a Solid, Liquid, or Gas.
Water can occur in any of the three phases (solid, liquid, and gas/steam)
The volume of a solid or a liquid isn’t necessarily determined by the shape of the container
Unlike a solid and liquid, the volume of a gas is determined by its container
Gas expands and contracts depending on the size and shape of its container
Brain Pop! • Read through the practice quiz. • We will do this quiz at the end of the video. http://www.brainpop.com/
pH Scale • Draw this on the back of your Brain Pop:
Acids: • substance that dissociates in water to yield a sour corrosive solution containing hydrogen ions, having a pH of less than 7, and turning litmus red.
Bases: Bases are alkaline: having a pH greater than 7. • They are characterized by a bitter taste, a slippery feel, the ability to turn litmus blue, and the ability to react with acids to form salts.
Closure: • At the bottom of the page summarize what you have learned about the properties of matter today.
