Ancient myths are similar in style to modern culture. • Rap culture has been cited as a prime example- where strength and physical power over others is seen as a good thing, similar values to Greek heroes.
Even in the myths there are inconsistencies in the time periods. • When the stories took place, things such as chariots were used differently for the military than how they were used in Homers time. Homer however wrote about them saying they were used how they were in his time. • This is Herodotus, founder of modern history.
People don’t actually speak in rhymed verse, Homer’s stories were stylized and sometimes unrealistic.
Homer’s myths have some basis in reality. • Block fighting was the only way of fighting during the time of Homer.
There were the normal soldiers and the champions of each side, they fought together and arguably had more effect over the outcome of the war than the champions • This was the invention of modern warfare al tactics erupted from the idea of a mass of soldiers attacking another block • But the idea of champions got phased out into the tactics and specialization of troops.
Though ancient the concept behind these tactics are still used on the modern battlefield
Greek military doctrine: • All about thinking the unthinkable • Accepting all possible outcomes
Homer understood that from the time his myths took place to the time he wrote them down the commanders of the military had shifted from being tribal kings to professional generals. • Amoebas are the foundation of Modern Civilization
