SRA / SDD SRA: Main Areas of Activity Three main areas of technology development are critical to ensuresuccessful development of sustainable biofuels in the European Union: FEEDSTOCKS managing competition for land resources (food & fodder vs. bioenergy) and for different biomass applications (transportation fuels, heat, electricity, industrial raw materials). Increasing yield per hectare and developing efficient supply logistics both for dedicated crops and residues. CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY developing energy efficient and reliable biomass-to-fuel conversion processes with feedstock flexibility and high quality products. LOGISTICS & END-USE TECHNOLOGIES optimisation of fuel-engine environmental and energetic performance ensuring compatibility with existing and future infrastructure and vehicles.

SET Plan & European Industrial Initiatives (EII) As part of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET–Plan)*, the European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative (EII-B) will focus on advanced biofuels in the context of an overall strategy for bio-energy • Scope: bio-energies and bio-energy carriers (solid, liquid, gaseous fuels, heat, electricity)includes biorefining/industrialintegration. • Goal: to accelerate the commercialdeployment of advancedtechnologies to boost the contribution of sustainable bioenergy to the EU 2020 targets. • Key features: -Industry lead - Leverage on European scale capability and added value to overcome national limitations - Sustainability essential in its three dimensions (economic, environmental, social) - Share risk & financing through public-private partnership * reference: COM (2007)723, 22.11.07
EBTP proposal for EIBI Key objectives and scope for European Industry Bioenergy Initiative, EIBI Key objectives of EIBI Enabling commercial availability of advanced bioenergy at large scale by 2020, including advanced biofuels covering up to 4 % of EU transportation energy needs by 2020. Strengthening EU world technology leadership for renewable transport fuels for diesel and jet engines, serving the fastest growing area of transport fuels in the world Scope of EIBIIdentify innovative bioenergy value chains which are not yet commercially available and could be deployed at large scale
EBTP proposal for EIBI Core activity and main outcome Core activity • Selection and funding of demonstration and reference plants projects Main outcome • a portfolio of advanced bioenergy technologies ready for large scale commercial deployment by 2020 • development of sustainable biomass resources • creation of green jobs, local production of energy, healthy bioenergy industrial base • focused R&D effort to support the deployment of innovative technologies validated at EU level • stimulating education & training in the related areas
EBTP proposal for EIBI The 7 generic value chains (1) • Conversion paths based on thermochemical processes: 1. Synthetic fuels / hydrocarbons from biomass via gasification (main markets: renewable transportation fuels for jet and diesel engines)2. Bio-methane and other gaseous fuels from biomass via gasification (substituting natural gas and other gaseous fuels)3. High efficiency power generation via gasification of biomass4. Bioenergy carriers from biomass via other thermochemical processes like pyrolysis, torrefaction etc. (main markets: fuels for heating, power generation or intermediate for further upgrading into transportation fuels)=> => =>

Ethanol and higher alcohols from sugars containing biomass (renewable transportation fuels as gasoline components, E85)6. Renewable hydrocarbons from sugars containing biomass via biological and/or chemical processes (main market: renewable transportation fuels for jet and diesel engines)7. Production of bioenergy carriers from CO2 & sunlight through micro- organism based production (algae, bacteria etc) and further upgrading into transportation fuels and valuable bio-products (main market: renewable transportation fuels for jet and diesel engines)

CONCLUSION R&D prioritiesandmore … • The European ambitious goals for climate and energy policy are callingfor step change innovation in bioenergy/biofuels value chains. • The SET-plan proposed European Industrial Initiative on Bio-Energy (EII- B) is aiming at delivering such dramatic progress. • Preliminary identification of value chains of potential relevance to EII-B is pointing to the need for further development and demonstration of critical and core technologies. • Industrial leadership backed by strong support from EU and Member States will be essential to manage the risks and secure financing. • Contributions from all key stakeholders of the biofuels/bioenergy value chains will be needed: biomass supply, industrial deployment, research and technology development, sustainability assessment.
