  1. Mary Draby Robinson

  2. Born : 27 November, 1757 Died : 26 December, 1800 Occupation : writer (poet and novelist ) Literary Movement : Romanticism . Books : Poem 1791 , The Widow 1794 , Angelina 1796, The False Friend , The natural Daughter .

  3. Mary Darby Robinson’s “To Him Who Complains” I see the scowling witch, DESPAIR Drink the big tear that scalds thy cheek; While thro’ the dark and turbid air,The screams of haggard ENVY break. From the cold mountain’s flinty steep,I hear the dashing waters roar;Ah! turn thee, turn thee, cease to weep,Thou hast no reason to deplore.

  4. See fell DESPAIR expiring fall,See ENVY from thy glances start; No more shall howling blasts appall,Or with’ring grief corrode thy heart. See FRIENDSHIP from her azure eyeDrops the fond balm for ev’ry painShe comes, the offspring of the sky,“TO RAZE THE TROUBLES OF THE brain.”

  5. These lines are taken from Mary Draby Robinson’s “ To Him Who Complains “ which was written in the Eighteenth Century, Romantic Era . • There are many Romantic glimpses in the poem. First, there are many scenes from nature, For example, " From the cold mountain’s flinty steep./ I hear the dashing waters roar" (5-6) .Second, there is a vast sense of emotion, For example, " Drink the big tear that scalds thy cheek" (2) and " Ah! turn thee, turn thee, cease to weep," (6). Third, there is a symbolism of hope , for example “She comes, the offspring of the sky,“TO RAZE THE TROUBLES OF THE brain.” .

  6. This poem is interesting because it shows how that man toughing and grief. Also, shows that we must have hope in order to pass through all difficulties .
