  2. The particle (out, up, etc.) can sometimes help you to work out the meaning of a phrasal verb. UP- increasing/ completing or finishing ON- continuing or progressing/ connecting OFF- ending or disconnecting/ moving away DOWN- reducing/ failing IN- moving inwards/ participating

  3. UP- increasing/ completing or finishing • The amount of money in her bank account is building up nicely. • I’m glad we’ve cleared up this misunderstanding once and for all.

  4. ON- continuing or progressing/ connecting • I suggest you read on to the end of the contract. • Let’s turn on the radio and listen to the news.

  5. OFF- ending or disconnecting/ moving away • Twenty athletes set off on their 100 km charity run. • To save money, switch off any unnecessary lights.

  6. DOWN- reducing/ failing • Talks between management and unions have broken down completely. • The Government has scaled down financial aid to the disaster area.

  7. IN- moving inwards/ participating • It took a while for the good news to sink in, then everyone smiled. • Even if you’re not a club member, you’re welcome to join in the activities.
