Preserving Research and Scholarship in the Carolina Digital Repository Jill Sexton CFE Faculty Showcase November 1, 2013
Evolution of scholarly communication Publication migrating away from tightly controlled print formats to more flexible online formats. We now have alternatives to journals, books, and conferences. Data may be shared more easily and in ways that enable more powerful and varied use than ever before Greater emphasis on reproducibility and transparency of research Open data now a requirement of many federal grants
Digital preservation Libraries and archives have always been in the business of preserving and making accessible the scholarly and cultural record Shift to digital changed our techniques, but not our mission Relative instability of digital media and file formats adds urgency to our task
What we collect Faculty and student work of enduring value • Publications • Unpublished work • Datasets • Research materials • Theses and dissertations Digital archival content • Audio • Video • Images • Print • University records
