Future and Alternative Funding Group • Create an understanding of different/new cost effective ways to carry out destination management • Investigate alternative approaches to DM • Look at innovative models for funding less dependent on public funding and more economically sustainable
Suggested Short Term Issues • Defining tourism in local areas New interest in visitor economy at all levels and new sectors Lack of understanding of “destinations”, “destination management”, “visitor economy” • Demonstrating effectiveness Need to illustrate value for money and success Methods to measure and benchmark inconsistently locally • Advocacy Both previous issues highlight the need for strong consistent messages
Short term issues (continued) • Networks No coordinated level of activity above the local in many areas The structure for collaboration between DM structures has gone but the need is recognised Informally it is still happening • Good destination management Increased private sector investment can mean short term focus on promotion only Need to ensure visitor experience managed too • Funding Public sector cuts, recession…finding innovative ways to work Squeezed private sector
