  1. Five Essential Elements for Future Regional Optical Networks Internet2 2006 Fall Member Meeting Christian Todorov

  2. Use Case – Network Design Objectives • High Level Objectives: • To light and utilize fiber path from Detroit to Chicago • Be able to utilize a wide variety of framing methods • Provide flexibility in Add/Drop locations • Facilitate connectivity and research by Internet2, its members and partners

  3. Use Case - Partners • Internet2 partners for lighting and maintaining the Detroit to Chicago fiber: • Merit Network • CANARIE • Meriton Networks • Level 3 Communications • Internet2

  4. Network Design

  5. Node Design – Add/Drop

  6. Node Design - Amplifier

  7. Capabilities Provided • Eight waves turned up in total • Two for Merit Network • Two for CANARIE • Two for HOPI • Two for Internet2 • Software configurable framing types LAN & WAN-PHY, OC-192 • Ease in moving Add/Drops among the four deployed nodes • Provides CANARIE a connection from Ontario to Chicago • Provides Merit Network connections from Ann Arbor to Chicago and Detroit • Allows for a HOPI connection from Ann Arbor to the node in Chicago • Allows for Internet2 to connect in Chicago for additional experimentation resources
