  33. Breath Alcohol Instrument • The task of a well designed breath alcohol instrument is to capture a fixed volume sample of deep lung breath and determine how much alcohol is in it.

  34. Breath Alcohol Instrument • The Well Designed Instrument • should have proven accuracy and reliability. • should not respond to any substances other than alcohol. • should obtain a deep lung sample and reject a shallow breath sample, which would read low. • should avoid reading “mouth” or “residual” alcohol from a recent drink. • Should have a Quality Assurance Program

  35. Most frequently asked questions • What is the legal limit in Trinidad & Tobago? Is this the same as the US limit? • How many drinks does it take to be over 35 ug/100ml? • What is one drink? • What do you calibrate the breathalyzer with? Ethanol in Nitrogen • Could I blow a positive reading after drinking the night before? Yes, depending on the amount of alcohol consumed • Can mouthwash give a positive reading? YES, but will not last for more than 15 mins-mouth alcohol • Can I lower the reading by putting a penny in my mouth? Chewing a brown paper bag? Sucking a mint? NO • Can cooking food with alcohol cause a positive test? NO

  36. Breath Alcohol Concentration * Approximate Equivalent

  37. Under Trinidad Law, Alcohol Concentration can be expressed in two ways The Blood Alcohol is expressed as: grams of alcohol per 100 ml blood The Breath Alcohol is expressed as: micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath (Trinidad) 35ug/100ml (35ug= .076%)

  39. Training Support and Set Up- the way forward • Refresher training for persons already trained and certified as Breath Alcohol Instructors • Work with Instructors to set up training modules to provide Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) Training, CBT • Help set up calibration stations-log books, calibration gas • Support from ROSE Personnel
