What is SNAME? • International professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the ship design, shipbuilding, and ship operating communities. • Founded in 1893, the Society comprises over 10,000 individuals throughout the world • Organized into 5 Regions • Each Region has professional “sections” and “student chapters” • 18 Sections • 22 Active Student Chapters • Local professionals belong to the Hampton Roads Section • Apprentice School Student Chapter would be affiliated with (funded by) the Hampton Roads Section, but operate independently

Student Chapter Requirements • Members join SNAME • Members elect officers • Chairman & Vice-Chairman • Secretary & Treasurer • Develop Chapter by-laws • Local HR SNAME Chapter sponsors • Faculty Advisor (Dr. Dick Boutwell) submits letter to SNAME HQ requesting approval to form a chapter • Patrick Ryan (E46), past president of the Virginia Tech Student Chapter and member of HR Chapter, Ex. Committee will provide new officer guidance.

8. Logistics and Program Considerations • Membership costs paid by NGNN • Meetings will be extra-curricular • Officers meet bi-weekly: Planning and Communications • Chapter meetings held monthly CAPT Berthold discusses aircraft carriers with SNAME student members

Chapter Activities • Officers organize professionals to speak • NGNN leadership • Navy, academic, and other professional representatives • Ship design and production site visits • SNAME National Conference and Ship Production Symposium paper submission opportunities • This year’s Annual Meeting/Student Congress will be in Houston, TX, on Oct. 19 - 21. • The 2006 Annual Meeting/Student Congress will be held in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, October 10 -13. • Annual sponsored student receptions for NGNN SNAME members

What’s expected from members? • Use your heart, head and hands to bring value to yourself, the School, SNAME and NGNN • Become an active participant in the success of this new SNAME Student Chapter & Hampton Roads Chapter • Develop links to other Student Sections • Develop links to the Student Steering Committee – SSC • Take charge and ownership for your career • Take advantage of leadership opportunities • Commit yourself to sustainable achievement in all your actions • Keep your promises and meet all obligations • Exceed expectations • Foster the success of others
