Technical and institutional partners : MWO is a large partnership… • Financial partners :
Objectives of the Observatory • Provide timely and quality information on Mediterranean wetlands status and trends. • Track threats to Mediterranean wetlands and identify actions to promote their protection and wise use and restoration. • Assess the level of consideration of wetlands in the context of sustainable development in the Mediterranean.
Conceptual model for MWO wetlands monitoring and evaluation • A set of 25 indicators (17 monitored in the first report, 2012) • Based on a conceptual model well-known to decision-makers
Human density is very high in coastal regions and along major rivers, … population is still increasing very fast in southern and eastern regions MWO Indicator : Surface area of Mediterranean wetlands Human demography Driving force ETAT
Mediterranean Countries use, overall and per year, one quarter of their renewable water resources, … but several countries already exceed the level of sustainability MWO Indicator : Surface area of Mediterranean wetlands Over-exploitation of renewable water resources Pressures ETAT
Titre MWO Indicator : Surface area of Mediterranean wetlands State Assess biodiversity state and trends : The Living Planet Index Birds: + 70 % since 1970 Other Vertebrates: - 40% since 1970
MWO Indicator : Water demand per sector The Educational and Touristic role of wetlands Impacts • Eco-tourism plays a major role to sustain rural economies • Indicator under development (visitor number registered in wetland visitor centres)
MWO Indicator : Water demand per sector Number multiplied by 2 between 2000(168 sites) and 2011 (344) ; (Two times more compared to world average during the same period) Surface multiplied by 3 : Designation of Ramsar sites Responses
MWO Indicator : Water demand per sector A communication strategy • Newsletter every 2 months • Mediterranean Wetlands Outlook • Factsheets (1 per indicator) • Thematic collection • (every 2 years; first issue on biodiversity) • Movie • Conferences ( Ramsar, IUCN, World Water Forum…)
