What Is An Electric Car? • Most cars nowadays use an internal combustion engine to provide energy. • The goal of an electric car is to provide energy to the car using an electronic battery (usually a lithium-ion battery) • A car with a purely electronic means of propulsion would create no air pollution.
Effects On The Environment • Electric cars are 97% cleaner than conventional gas powered cars. • They do not produce particulate matter (particles in the air that can aggravate asthma and irritate the respiratory system)
Effects On The Environment (contd.) • There are absolutely zero tailpipe emissions • Since there is no need for combustion or other processes in an electric car, there are much less parts to be replaced (engine hoses, fuel filters, etc. )
Is It Possible? • Electric cars are very possible, work and research on this subject is mainly focused on enhancing performance.
Is It Going On Now? • Electric cars are actually widespread throughout the world, especially Europe, and becoming even more prevalent. • Recently, governments have been providing bonuses, such as tax breaks, for choosing electric cars.
Where Is It Used? • For the most part, electric cars can be found in any industrialized country. • Most prominent presence in Europe and Asia.
Pros • Lessens dependency on fossil fuels. • Creates much less greenhouse gases than a conventional car. • Much cleaner than an internal combustion car, electric cars create zero tailpipe emissions.
Pros (contd.) • The money saved on fuel greatly outweighs the higher price of an electric car compared to a conventional internal combustion car and the electrical cost of recharging.
Cons • Using a rechargeable electric car means that you must constantly worry about and plan around the availability of an outlet for recharging.
Cons (contd.) • As of now, electric cars are far more expensive than conventional ones. • The means of producing electricity for the cars will likely come from a sort of power plant that has high emissions.
Cons (contd.) • Consumers and producers alike are worried about the unreliability of the car batteries. • Producers are not satisfied with the shelf life of electric cars. • Also, batteries are tempermental depending upon the temperature.
Conclusion • Electric cars are a good idea and are doing well at the moment, but scientists mainly need to: • Enhance performance • Make charging stations more portable and widespread • Make batteries more resilient and reliable • If these goals are met, there would be no reason for electric cars not to replace conventional cars in the globalmmarket.
