  2. Mission Statement To educate, train, assist and inspire high school students who are interested in helping others.

  3. Vision Teach2Serve will build a nationwide community of select high school students who want to commit themselves to social change throughout the United States and the rest of the world. Our students will graduate from high school with a unique and proven set of leadership and social entrepreneurship skills. Teach2Serve schools will award participating students a Public Service Certificate based on a rigorous curriculum designed to teach students how to think about and commit themselves to social change as they approach college.

  4. Partner Schools Teach2Serve will create a network of partner schools across the United States that will be at the forefront of public service education for high school students. Students at partner schools will be selected to enter the program in 10th grade and will be mentored by their school’s internal program director. The Teach2Serve Public Service Certificate will allow colleges with public policy or social entrepreneurship degrees to identify those students with a proven commitment to public service during the application process.

  6. Curriculum Four areas of study comprise the scope of the Teach2Serve Curriculum: Ethics and Values of Service and Philanthropy Social Frameworks and Power Structures Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Skills Developing Sustainable Initiatives for Social Change

Curriculum Courses may include: • Survey course on Public Service and Social Entrepreneurship • Ethics • Capstone Project Workshops may include: • Grant Writing • Starting Charitable Organizations/NGOs • Conflict Resolution • Business modeling • Public Speaking • Leadership Skills • How to identify and think about the historical basis of a Need; how to create “the fix”. • Metrics for measuring results

  8. Pilot Program: 2010 – 2011 Two schools have entered the Teach2Serve pilot program: The Solebury School, an independent middle and high school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Laurel School, a K–12 independent school for girls in Cleveland, Ohio. As founding partners, educators at both schools will play an integral role in curriculum development and will make vital contributions to the Teach2Serve program.

The Solebury School Since its founding in 1925, the Solebury School has prided itself in its mission to provide a challenging college preparatory curriculum that encourages students to explore and develop their individual skills and talents in an informal educational community. One of the bedrocks of a Solebury education is community service and activism. Solebury’s faculty and administration is fully engaged with its students in all aspects of their community activities.

  10. The Laurel School The Laurel School’s legacy as an outstanding girls’ school is founded on academic excellence, respect and shared values and tradition. Implicit in Laurel’s mission statement is the expectation that each student take an active role in serving the community outside of the school. Laurel has a unique program called “Passport” which is the school’s Global Education Initiative. This program teaches students about other parts of the world and, when appropriate, emphasizes the role of service in the global environment.

College Sourcing Teach2Serve will work closely with participating school’s college placement officers to identify appropriate colleges for each of our students who want to major in public policy, social entrepreneurship or other fields related to public service. We will be advised by independent, proven college counselors. We believe that it is important for colleges to value our program in their admissions process and we will work hard to ensure that colleges recognize Teach2Serve’s Public Service Certification and curriculum. Teach2Serve is also building relationships with AmeriCorps, VISTA and a variety of NGOs for students who may want to take a “gap” year before attending college.

  12. www.teach2serve.org Teach2Serve is currently creating a web-based community where students and teachers from our partner schools can share ideas and utilize our resources to reach their public service goals. • Multimedia Library • News and Events • Links to appropriate NGO websites and online conferences • Social Networking • Alumni Networking Teach2Serve will build across multiple platforms to create an engaging and encompassing web presence.

Measuring Results Teach2Serve will produce measurable results in a number of key areas: • Number of partner schools and participating students. • The impact of student public service projects on targeted constituencies. • College placement into public service programs. Our best metrics of success will be through the discipline of following our alumni and their achievements through college and beyond. We are confident by the early interest from partner schools that Teach2Serve’s model of early public service learning will be very successful and is worthy of support.

  14. We Teach Individuals to Help Others We believe that dedication to service starts from the heart, but is ultimately successful through education and training. Every person we help dedicate to public service will create a chain reaction by helping those in need, whether locally, nationally or internationally. We will give our students the skills, ultimately they will have to choose their own fields of interests: education, healthcare, women’s rights, energy, poverty, food and water etc. In the course of motivating students to help others, they will indeed be helping themselves. Teach2Serve is not only for honors students, it is for a cross-section of students who have a passion and commitment to public service. Learning to help others is also a reinforcement of self-esteem.

  15. Leadership Alan Sheriff Executive Director Teach 2 Serve was founded by Alan Sheriff, Co-CEO and founder of Solebury Capital Group LLC. Alan has worked on Wall Street in a variety of senior positions for over 25 years at Salomon Brothers and Credit Suisse and has traveled extensively throughout the world on business. Witnessing a cross section of people and economies around the globe brought the importance of giving and social entrepreneurship into focus for Alan. Alan and his wife Karen have supported causes in education and several projects in Africa. Alan graduated with a BA in Political Science, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Rochester in 1981 and with a Masters in Public Policy from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in 1983. Alan is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. He occasionally teaches courses at the Solebury School where he is also a trustee. Alan’s courses have included ‘Genocide’, ‘War and Children’ and ‘Giving: The Road to Public Service’. Alan and Karen believe that educating high school students on leadership, social entrepreneurship, social change and public service will help build a dedicated workforce for charitable/NGO work in the future.

  16. Leadership Josh Perlsweig Program Director Josh graduated with a B.A. in Political Science – Public Policy and a minor in Environmental Science from North Carolina State University in 2007. A majority of his senior year research related to the Environmental Justice Movement and issues of environmental policy and ethics. Josh was a dedicated member of multiple grassroots social change organizations on his college campus and has taken an active role in civic engagement and community service in his personal and professional endeavors. Josh is a second generation alumnus of the Solebury School and understands its unique culture and community that make it an ideal partner for the Teach2Serve Pilot Program.
