Chapter 1 Why Study Physiology of Exercise?
What is exercise physiology ? • A subdivision of general physiology • Concerned with the improvement of human functional capacities • Focused on health and improving athletic performance
Why is physical fitness important? Optimal levels of physical activity and fitness are conducive to lifelong good health. Visit the National Association for Health and Fitness at www.physicalfitness.org
The major conclusions of the 1996 Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health • All people regardless of age or gender benefit from regular physical activity. • Significant health benefits can be obtained by including a moderate amount of physical activity on most days of the week. • Additional health benefits can be gained through greater amounts of physical activity. • Physical activity reduces the risk of premature death and certain diseases, and promotes mental health.
The major conclusions of the 1996 Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health (cont.) • More than 60 percent of American adults do not regularly exercise, and 25 percent are not active at all. • Nearly half of American youth 12-21 years of age are not vigorously active on a regular basis, and activity declines during adolescence. • Daily enrollment in physical education classes declined among high school students from 42 percent in 1991 to 25 percent in 1995. • Interventions to promote physical activity in schools, work sites, and health care settings are being evaluated. Athletic performance can be improved by • Sound grounding in exercise physiology • Avoiding overtraining • Maintaining the good health of athletes • Good nutrition • Avoiding drugs to improve performance
Four advantages that professional exercise physiologists have over lay coaches and trainers in prescribing exercise are • They can better predict results. • They can better control the conditioning/ training process. 3. They can get better results per unit of time spent. 4. They can understand the cause-and-effect relationships. Visit the American College of Sports Medicine at www.acsm.org
To prescribe exercise responsibly • You need at least a basic understanding of the physiology underlying physical activity • You need scientific answers to these questions: • How much exercise is enough? • How much is too much? • How much is best for any given individual? The five main steps of the scientific method • State the problem • Develop a hypothesis • Determine an experimental method to test the hypothesis • Observe the results • Draw conclusions For more information, visit The Scientific Method at http://phyun5.ucr.edu/~wudka/Physics7/Notes_www/node5.html
