Writing out equations. How can you track where the atoms are going?. Create an Atom inventory Before and after a reaction occurs Ex: Mn(s) + O 2 (g) > MnO Atom Inventory Before After Mn 1 Mn 1 O 2 O 1.

How can you track where the atoms are going? • Create an Atom inventory Before and after a reaction occurs • Ex: Mn(s) + O2(g) > MnO Atom Inventory Before After Mn 1 Mn 1 O 2 O 1
If the atoms are not equal you must change the amount of the reactant and product • This is done by changing the number of moles • This is shown by adding a co-effient infront of the reactant and product • The coefficient shows the number each atom should be multiplyed by. It is written in front of the atom or molecule. • Ex: 2 Mn(s) + O2(g) > 2MnO(s) • Do an atom inventory afterwards • Mn 2 Mn 2 • O 2 O 2 • This shows that 2 moles of Mn + 1 mole of O2 will create 2 moles of MnO
Grab a bag of M and M’s which contains • 14 Blue • 12 Green • 6 Orange • 4 Brown
H2 + O2 => H2O • Show with m/m’s H-BlueO-Green • Take an atom inventory • 2-H 2-O 2-H 1-O • Now Balance with M and M’s • 2H2 + O2 => 2H2O
Remember you show that you have more than 1 polyatomic ion with parentheses. If you add a coeffient you are adding that amount of a polyatomic • Mg(OH)2 • Show with Mand M’s- Mg Brwon , O Green, H Blue • Do an atom inventory • Mg(OH)2 Atom inventory 1 Mg 2 O 2 H • 2Mg(OH)2 Show with M and M’s • D a atom inventory • Atom inventory 2 Mg 4 O 4 H
H3PO4 + KOH => K3PO4 + H2O • Show with m and m’s O Green, H Blue,P- Orange K Brown • Atom inventory • 4-H 1-P 1-K 5-O > 3-K 1-P 5-O 2-H • Now Balance • H3PO4 + 3 KOH => K3PO4 + 3 H2O • Atom inventory • H-6, P-1 K-3 O-7 > H-6, O-7 P-1 K-3 • Show with M and M’s
You can write equations using words or symbols… • Diatomic molecules must be taken into account • Ex Aluminum bromide + Chlorine gas • AlBr3(s) + Cl2 (g) > • Other Diatomics: H2, N2,O2,F2,Cl2,Br2,I2 • Something can break down into other substances. If this is the case it will look like this • A > C +B • Ex: KClO3 > KCl + O2 • Another word that describe a product being taken apart is decompose • When Something burns it must be in the presence of Oxygen gasO2 • Write out this equation. Solid Copper was combined with acqueous Nitric Acid to produce gaseous nitrogen dioxide, water and Copper (II) Nitrate in the liquid form. • Cu(s) + HNO3(aq) > Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + NO2 (g) + H20 (l) (ac)
